Expresses a strong opposition or contradiction. Used to completely oppose or refute what was just said, not just to nuance it.
Usage
Introduces a statement that directly contradicts the previous one. Stronger than 'mais' or 'par contre' - implies the opposite is true.

Tu penses que c'est facile ? Au contraire, c'est très difficile !
You think it's easy? On the contrary, it's very difficult!
