Expresses a condition or concession that doesn't prevent the main action. Used to acknowledge an obstacle that is overcome or a condition that doesn't change the outcome.
Usage
Followed by indicative mood (unlike 'bien que' which takes subjunctive). Common in both spoken and written French to express hypothetical or real conditions.
Examples
Je vais courir même s'il pleut.
I'm going running even if it rains.
Context: Determination despite condition
Même si c'est cher, je vais l'acheter.
Even if it's expensive, I'm going to buy it.
Context: Overcoming obstacle
Il est content même s'il n'a pas gagné.
He's happy even though he didn't win.
Context: Positive attitude despite setback
Important Notes
Takes indicative mood, not subjunctive (unlike 'bien que'). Very useful for expressing determination or resilience.
